Kenya faces a persistent unemployment crisis, with an estimated overall rate of 5.4% in 2024, though youth unemployment soars to 11.9% for those aged 15-34, with some studies suggesting up to 67% of this demographic remain jobless. The challenge is acute due to a rapidly growing labor force\u2014adding 800,000 to 1 million entrants annually\u2014against a mere 75,000-200,000 formal jobs created yearly, predominantly in the informal sector. Land scarcity, skill mismatches, and economic constraints like inflation further limit opportunities, driving rural-urban migration and leaving many, especially young women, economically vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In rural areas like Kakamega, the situation is even more pronounced. With over 84% of Kenya\u2019s youth aged 15-24 residing in rural regions, unemployment is fueled by limited land holdings, lack of capital, and inadequate entrepreneurial skills. Many rely on casual labor or migrate, while substance abuse and low education levels compound the issue. Despite initiatives like youth-in-agribusiness programs, systemic barriers\u2014such as poor infrastructure and slow policy implementation\u2014hinder progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equality Edge Organization is therefore tackling this gap through its second pillar, Sustainable Livelihoods and Economic Empowerment. The organization empowers young people, particularly women, youth and teen mothers in Kakamega, with training in ornamentation using recycled materials like beads, textile waste, and glass bottles. As showcased in their vibrant keychains, necklaces, bracelets, and decorative pieces, this skill transforms waste into marketable art, fostering income generation and self-reliance. By leveraging sustainable practices, Equality Edge Organization not only addresses unemployment but also builds climate resilience, reducing landfill waste and promoting eco-friendly livelihoods. Through hands-on workshops, participants gain marketable skills, boosting economic independence and community resilience, turning a challenge into a beacon of hope for Kenya\u2019s youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
